Software that supports my workflow

An acquaintance recently asked me what type of software I used to process my images. I started a list on the whiteboard in my office and he asked me if I had a blog somewhere where I could post the list. As it turns out, I do. This one. I just keep forgetting about it. At any rate these are the products I use in my workflows:

Nikon Transfer - Comes with my Nikon DLSRs. I use it as a CF card sucker
iMatch - My DAM database
Adobe Lightroom - Currently in beta, but already a pretty capable product
Adobe Photoshop CS - Like I have a choice. Sometimes you've got to retouch. If yer gonna do it. This is the only way.
Qimage Studio - When I can't print from lightroom, this is the best print/print sharpening utility I've found.
Quadtone RIP/QTR GUI - Produces outstanding B&W prints on my Epson 2200 which uses Mediastreet Generations Archival Ink. In.dis.pensible.
Profile Prism - Printer profiling software from the same folks that produce Qimage. Allows me to create and fine tune profile for each of the different ink/paper combinations I use with my inkjet printers.

So there you have it. In a later post, I'll talk a little more about my workflows: color and black and white.

My how time flies

It all seems so long ago now. 4 years ago I headed to Qatar to do my bit for the war on terror. A bunch of us, evenly split between military and civilian, deployed to a tent city on a bare base to work on an important project. We got it done in record time working over Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's. It was hot during the day and coolish at night. We had a daily ration of 3 beers and plenty of military chow. There were people in theater a lot worse off than us, so we didn't complain. I took this picture on the way to chow in the morning. Qatar is on a peninsula that juts out into the Persian Gulf and it can get quite foggy at times. There were three of our compatriots walking ahead of us, lieutenants all, approaching the sandbag, concrete and gravel bunkers located between each row of tents.  Posted by Picasa

It's this kind of day today

Why can't it be sunny on the autumn weekends? I took this picture a couple of years ago on a day very similar to today here in New England.

The sky wasn't really blue at all. (Gasp! Fauxtography!)

I've planned to take a week off, two weeks hence, for the express purpose of wandering around with my photo gear. I hope to get a few good shots.

With my luck, it'll rain all week. Posted by Picasa

Back. In. Action!

Okay, I'm back online. I know, you're thrilled. Me too. I'll just have to figure this blogging thing out as I go along. With any luck, it won't be all that painful.

One long whistle, a long, long time ago
